AIDS 2026, the 26th International AIDS Conference

Immigration

It is each delegate’s responsibility to verify Brazil’s visa requirements and apply for a visa if needed

alternative text

You should apply as early as possible – and at least three months before the conference – to allow sufficient time for processing. Be aware that delegates are not automatically entitled to a visa.

Entry requirements will depend on the delegates’ nationality:

  • Nationals from Australia, Canada and the United States must apply for an eVisa.
  • Nationals from all other countries should check here to find out if they require a Visitor Visa (VIVIS) or if they qualify for a visa waiver based on Brazil’s country agreements.

Visitor Visa (VIVIS)

Before initiating a visa application, please carefully read the visa information on the website of the Brazilian Consular Section responsible for your country of residence. Please note that every Brazilian Consulate may have different procedures and processing times.

Generally, the visa application process follows these steps:

  1. Applicants must fill out the online visa application form and upload the required documents, including a passport photo and their signature.

The required documents may include the following (depending on the Consulate):

    • Valid passport with at least two blank pages
    • National ID or residence permit
    • Hotel reservation
    • Flight tickets to and from Brazil
    • AIDS 2026 letter of invitation
    • Proof of sufficient financial means (such as bank statements for the last three months or payslips)
  2. Once you have completed the online application form, you must print, sign and attach your passport photo to the Visa Request Form Receipt (RER). You must personally submit this form and all the original documents that you uploaded at the Consulate (or send them by mail in some cases). Depending on the Consulate, you may be required to pay the visa fee before or after submitting the documentation, and they may request an interview.
  3. Upon receipt of the request, the Consular Section will review your application. They may request additional documentation and/or information.

To avoid delays, applicants should carefully consult the website of the respective mission well before their departure date to inform themselves about the visa procedures and the relevant documentation that must be submitted. If you have any questions, please contact the Brazilian Consulate where your visa application will be processed.

The duration of the stay of an approved VIVIS ranges from 30 to 90 days. You can find detailed information on the duration of the stay with a VIVIS here

Visa fees vary by country, and usually start from USD 80.

eVisa (Australia, Canada, United States)

Nationals from Australia, Canada and the United States must apply for an eVisa through the official Brazil eVisa platform.

Applicants must follow these steps to apply for their eVisa:

  • Register an account.
  • Provide all application details and necessary documents through the VFS-managed platform, using either a computer or a mobile phone.
  • Once all the information has been provided, applicants are required to pay the eVisa fee of USD 80.90 via Mastercard/Visa credit and debit cards.
  • Once the payment has been successful, applicants will be informed of the status of their application via email, which will indicate whether the application has been approved or rejected or if additional documentation is required. If the application has been approved, applicants will receive an email with a PDF file that contains their eVisa.
  • Please ensure that you download, print and present the eVisa at the time of boarding and landing in Brazil. In addition, it is recommended that you keep a copy of the file on your mobile phone for easy access. If applicants fail to print and present their eVisa at the airport, they will not be permitted to board the plane.

AIDS 2026 letter of invitation

To receive a letter of invitation for AIDS 2026, delegates and students/postdocs/young persons must first register for AIDS 2026, pay in full and submit any required supporting documentation. Fully registered delegates can then download a letter of invitation directly from their conference account.

Please complete the following steps to download the letter of invitation for AIDS 2026:

  • Log in to your conference account here.
  • Click on your name at the top right and select “User account”.
  • Update your passport information.
  • Then, under the “Registration” tab, you will be able to click on the button to generate the letter of invitation, which you will receive via email.

It is important to note that this letter of invitation does not impose any financial obligations on the IAS. All costs associated with participating in the conference are the sole responsibility of the delegate. Furthermore, the letter of invitation does not guarantee that a visa will be issued for entry into Brazil.

If you have submitted a scholarship application, please do not register for the conference separately. If your application is successful, the IAS will contact you and instruct you on how to register and receive an award and invitation letter by early April 2026.

FAQs

How do I obtain a visa for Brazil?

Please note that it is each delegate’s responsibility to investigate visa requirements for Brazil and apply for a visa if needed.

Does the IAS provide any form of support in the visa application process?

Fully registered delegates can obtain a letter of invitation from the IAS to support their visa application.

What if my visa application is unsuccessful?

Please be aware that Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) retains exclusive authority over the visa approval process. The IAS is unable to offer additional support in the event of a visa denial.

Can I change my registration from in person to virtual or get a refund if my visa is unsuccessful?

If the delegate applied for the visa in time (that is, at least three months before the travel date) and can show proof that the visa was not granted even though all requested documents were provided as required, the delegate may request the following:

  • Changing their in-person plus virtual registration to a virtual registration and getting the difference to their in-person plus virtual registration fee refunded
  • Receiving a full reimbursement for their in-person plus virtual registration minus a handling fee of USD 65

To request either of these options, please submit your request (including any required supporting documents) to the AIDS 2026 Registration team via email no later than 27 July 2026. No requests will be accepted after this date. Please note that requests to switch to virtual registration or to receive a refund will be processed only once the delegate has received written confirmation from the AIDS 2026 Registration team.
