Remembering Adaora Adimora

IAS – the International AIDS Society – mourns the passing of former IAS Governing Council member Adaora Adimora, the Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Professor of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She passed away on 1 January 2024.

“Adaora Adimora’s passing is a tremendous loss for us all and especially for the most marginalized whose needs and concerns she championed throughout her career,” IAS President Sharon Lewin said. “A distinguished researcher and powerful voice for global health equity has left us.”

Dr Adimora clinically treated people living with HIV for more than 25 years. She was a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and her many influential roles include chairing the Women at Risk Committee for the National Institutes of Health’s HIV Prevention Trials Network. Her research on HIV epidemiology and prevention helped trace links between social forces, such as mass incarceration, in racial disparities in acquiring HIV in the US.

She served on the IAS Governing Council from 2015 to 2022.

The IAS offers its sincerest condolences to Dr Adimora’s loved ones.
