Remembering Dr Scott Hammer

IAS – the International AIDS Society – mourns the death of our former Governing Council member Scott Hammer, Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Columbia University. A respected HIV researcher and physician, Dr Hammer passed away on 17 November 2021.

“Dr Scott Hammer played a pivotal role in the development of the current HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy) paradigm that has saved millions of lives,” IAS President Adeeba Kamarulzaman said. “He will be missed by us all.”

A pioneer in establishing effective HIV treatment and, more recently, the search for an HIV vaccine, Dr Hammer was closely associated with other leading institutions, including the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) and the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR).

In recognition of his contribution to the HIV response, Dr Hammer was elected by IAS Members to serve on the IAS Governing Council for two terms (2000-2004 and 2004-2008).

The IAS offers its sincerest condolences to Dr Hammer’s family and friends.
