IAS – the International AIDS Society – mourns the untimely death of IAS Member Dr Ly Penh Sun, Director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Dermatology and STD (NCHADS), Cambodia. A champion for HIV prevention and treatment across Asia and the Pacific, Dr Sun sadly passed away on 9 November 2021.
“As Director of NCHAD, Dr Ly Penh Sun played a major role in Cambodia’s highly successful HIV response,” IAS President Adeeba Kamarulzaman said. “Cambodia was one of the few countries to achieve the 90-90-90 targets in 2017, a testament to his leadership, unwavering community collaboration and tireless dedication to following the science. He will be deeply missed.”
Dr Sun was the driving force behind some of Cambodia’s most effective HIV initiatives. These include the introduction of HIV self-testing and same-day start of antiretroviral (ARV) treatment, as well as the expansion of multi-month dispensing of ARVs to ensure access to treatment services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The IAS offers its sincerest condolences to Dr Sun’s family and friends.
