It is with sadness and much gratitude that, on behalf of IAS - the International AIDS Society - Governing Council, I am letting you know that IAS Executive Director Kevin Osborne has announced his departure from the organization.
After close to five successful years at the IAS, first as Director of HIV Programmes and Advocacy, and then as Executive Director, Kevin will depart at the end of September 2020 to join his partner abroad. With Kevin at the helm, the organization has benefited from his steady and visionary leadership during a particularly challenging time globally, which culminated in the IAS hosting the first virtual International AIDS Conference, AIDS 2020: Virtual, and the world’s first scientific COVID-19 Conference.
AIDS 2020: Virtual helped refocus and revitalize the global HIV response despite attention focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, the IAS demonstrated responsibility and agility in opening its platforms for the virtual COVID-19 Conference, providing space for the scientific and policy communities to explore ways to tackle this new crisis that in many ways overlaps with the HIV epidemic that we have been dealing with for nearly 40 years. Years from now, I know that we will look back at AIDS 2020: Virtual as a turning point for the HIV response, one that brought the global community together to tackle COVID-19 and re-energized the effort against HIV and AIDS.
During his tenure, Kevin led a reform of the IAS’s governance structure, initiated a review of the role of the International AIDS Conferences within a changing global health environment, and got a strategy refresh under way, which together leave the IAS in a formidable position to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
Speaking for the entire IAS community, I thank Kevin from the bottom of my heart for the vision, agile leadership and compassionate humanity he has brought to the organization, and wish him the very best for his private and professional future. Thanks to Kevin, the IAS is now best positioned to keep a sharp focus on our core mission to end the AIDS epidemic as we navigate a changing world around us.
While Kevin will be greatly missed at the IAS, he will always have a home within the IAS family.
The IAS will begin the search for our next Executive Director today. Birgit Poniatowski, currently Deputy Executive Director and Director, Development and Performance, will assume the position of acting Executive Director from 1 October.
