The International AIDS Society welcomes the announcement of Winnie Byanyima named as the new Executive Director of UNAIDS.
A former parliamentarian in Uganda, Byanyima has served as Executive Director of Oxfam International since 2013. She is a globally recognized and respected champion for gender equality and poverty eradication, bringing decades of political leadership and expertise to this role.
Byanyima assumes the leadership of UNAIDS at a pivotal moment in the HIV response - when gains in reducing new infections have slowed, and when financing for HIV prevention and treatment programmes is declining. In a shifting global health landscape where HIV is becoming more integrated with broader health development efforts, the international community will be able to draw on Byanyima’s extensive experience in harnessing political commitment and galvanizing collaborations across governments, multilateral agencies, the private sector and civil society.
With key populations and their sexual partners accounting for 54% of new HIV infections globally, we look forward to working with UNAIDS under the new leadership to increase focus on addressing pervasive stigma and championing human rights as fundamental pillars in our joint efforts.
This is a new and exciting chapter for UNAIDS and Winnie Byanyima will offer fresh thinking and approaches to our shared goal of strengthening and sustaining the global HIV response.
