The International AIDS Society (IAS) is grateful to Dr. Jack Whitescarver for his lifetime of dedication in the fight against HIV and AIDS and his more than twenty years as a member of the IAS. Dr. Whitescarver has announced that he will step down as Director of the Office of AIDS Research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States as of 1 July 2015. He has held the position since 2000.

During his NIH tenure, Dr. Whitescarver launched visionary domestic and international research and training initiatives to meet the evolving challenges of the epidemic. In recognition of his tireless work to advocate for HIV research and ensure that scientific advances translate into actual benefits for the millions of people infected with HIV and AIDS throughout the world, he was awarded the first-ever IAS Presidential Award in 2010. He remains a longtime friend and trusted advisor to the International AIDS Society (IAS) and we look forward to continuing to work with him.
