What is your motivation for engaging in HIV cure and remission research?
YRG CARE is the pioneer of HIV research in India, ever since the identification of the first HIV case in India, we have been working on community outreach, socio-behavioural research, disease management and patient care. Having worked in this multiple area of HIV research I can understand HIV in clinical, biological, social and patient perspective. This has been the factor of motivation for gaining knowledge on HIV cure/remission and march with the global researchers to eradicate HIV.
What is your current area of research?
I am Shanmugam Saravanan, Associate Professor, YRG CARE, Chennai, have been involved in NIH DAIDS clinical trials (ACTG/HPTN) as a site virologist and heading Regional HIV-1 Specialty Genotyping laboratory. My current area of interest is to develop/validate the assays that quantify the level of residual latent and replicationcompetent virus; to measure plasma HIV RNA (single-copy assay), cell-associated RNA, episomal DNA including 2- LTR circles, ratios of non-integrated to integrated DNA to measure & characterize HIV-1 viral reservoirs that cause rebounding of virus and also to investigate strategies that lead to purging of the latent reservoir and a cure for HIV/AIDS.
