Post-doctoral Fellowship

Postdoctoral Fellowship applicants must read the following information before beginning the application.

Eligibility Criteria

The applicant:
  1. Has earned/will earn a doctoral degree no more than six years ago in the case of PhD or no more than eight years ago in the case of MD1 without extended research experience in the field of medicine, public health, biomedical, behavioral, mathematical or social sciences or another field. Applicants should have completed their doctoral degree before the beginning of the Fellowship (last possible starting date is 1 June 2013)
  2. Is proficient in English.
  3. Is affiliated with one of the following types of institutions: for-profit organization, non-profit organization, public or private institution (i.e., universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories), state/provincial government, local government, or non-governmental organizations.
  4. Has an appropriate mentor who holds an established post for the duration of the Fellowship and has a track record in research and training in HIV and drug use 2. All applicants must choose a mentor in an institution different from their current institution. If you have no mentor, please refer to the IAS-NIDA mentors list and contact a suitable mentor.
  5. Is able to start his Fellowship before 1 June 2013.
  6. Has read the Fellowship policies and procedures.

Fellowship Information

  1. Individual applicants are limited to submitting only one application per round in this competition.
  2. The application must be completed and submitted by the individual applying for the Fellowship.
  3. The fellow and his mentor will be invited to attend the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012) in Washington DC, 22-27 July 2012.
  4. The selected fellow will complete an 18-month Fellowship in the field of HIV and drug use during which she/he will be provided with research training by a mentor who is an expert in the fields of HIV and drug use research.
  5. A stipend of $75,000 USD will be offered to cover cost of living, personal expenses and round-trip travel to fellowship site during the 18-month Fellowship period. Fellowship funds cannot cover direct research costs.
  6. By the end of the Fellowship, the selected Fellow should be able to:
    1. have a better understanding about the research issues related to HIV and drug use;
    2. conduct research on HIV and drug use;
    3. report his or her work to an international HIV conference;
    4. submit a manuscript to a peer-reviewed scientific journal; and
    5. apply relevant knowledge and skills gained during the Fellowship in his or her home country.
