THE TWIN EPIDEMICS OF HIV AND DRUG USE: INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES FOR HEALTHY COMMUNITIES
HIV & Drug Policy Pre-Conference
20th July 2012,
Washington D.C., United States
Invitation only
Background
Globally, one in ten new HIV infections is attributable to unsafe injection of illicit drugs. Therefore, This pre-conference focused on three interconnected themes:
- advances in policing practice and legal reforms that increase access to HIV care and treatment for addiction for people who use drugs;
- innovations in integrated healthcare services;
- the challenges of bringing interventions to scale.
Bringing together experts, professions and policy-makers from the fields of policing, drug policy and HIV care, the preconference focused on solution and international experience-sharing. It strived to deepen understanding of the ways that enforcement, legal reform and public health can work together to stop the HIV epidemic among people who use drugs.
