The International AIDS Society welcomes the appointment of Dr. Jim Yong Kim as the new President of the World Bank
19 April, 2012 (Geneva, Switzerland) – The International AIDS Society (IAS) welcomes the appointment of Dr. Jim Yong Kim as the new President of the World Bank, for a five-year term beginning on July 1, 2012.
“We fully support the appointment of Dr. Kim to lead the World Bank, as we expect his extensive and widely recognized experience in the fields of HIV and tuberculosis to be a shot in the arm for promoting the efforts in the global HIV response, and we look forward to our continuing partnership with the World Bank in the future” said IAS Executive Director Bertrand Audoin.
It is the first time since 1944 that the World Bank opened up its selection process to all nationals from its membership. “While the World Bank’s presidency has always gone to the U.S. by convention, it is a good thing that the process has been now opened to competition from emerging countries”, said IAS President Elly Katabira. “Enhancing the democratic approach of this vote is likely to help underserved populations make their voice increasingly heard in the future and help to shape the global funding of health projects in the 21st century”.
Dr. Kim, 52-year-old, is a Korean American physician who dedicated himself to improving health and social justice worldwide over the past two decades. He became President of Dartmouth College in 2009, and amongst several previous assignments, served as Director of the World Health Organization’s Department of HIV/AIDS, where he helped developing countries scale up their HIV treatment, prevention, and care programmes and largely contributed to pushing the treatment strategy for AIDS in Africa, bringing the number of Africans treated up to 7 million people as of 2012. Dr. Kim also co-founded Partners in Health, a non-profit health care organization focused on rural health projects including HIV prevention and treatment in poor communities in Latin America, Africa, Russia and the United States.
