“There is an urgent need for more methods to prevent HIV infection, especially those that put women in control.”
- Peter Piot, UNAIDS Executive Director -

Given that vaccine research has yet to produce a viable HIV vaccine, the development of other prevention strategies is becoming more imperative. Research in this field could provide more options and methods of HIV prevention, outside of the development of a vaccine. Biomedical research is of increasing international importance because of concerns related to poor condom usage in sub-Saharan Africa. The need for better methods to control the transmission of HIV is becoming more apparent. Currently, biomedical strategies such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PREP), microbicides, and suppression of HSV-2 are being studied and their effectiveness towards decreasing the spread of HIV continues to be researched. Evidence shows that the introduction of these strategies, most likely in combination with each other, could greatly influence the AIDS epidemic in the future.
