Background: Very few KAP studies have been conducted among MSM which is hidden but a high risk group in Vietnam. This study was to describe KAP and HIV prevalence among MSM who visited PIHCMC. Methods: In the year 2000, 208 consecutive MSM who consulted at the Consultation Unit of PIHCMC were interviewed, counseled and blood-withdrew for serological tests of HIV (ELISA), HBsAg (ELISA) and syphilis (BW+TPHA). Results: average age of MSM was 27.3 (range: 17-45) and 52% were in low education. Nearly 80% were single and more than 85% had multiple sex-partners in the last year. Most of them (80.2%) had insufficient knowledge about HIV/AIDS, nearly 90% had unprotected sex and 20% were injecting drug users. More than 30% had urethral syndrome. The sero-prevalence rates of HIV, HBsAg, syphilis were 5.8%, 27% and 7%, respectively. Conclusion: Current KAP of MSM in this study highly predispose them to HIV infection. These findings show a critical need of interventions on MSM in HCMC.
