Prevalence, knowledge and related risky sexual behaviors of HIV/AIDS among receptive men who have sex with men (MSM) in Khartoum State, Sudan, 2005

Background: This is the first study ever to address HIV/AIDS among MSM in Sudan. It aimed to measure HIV prevalence and generate information regarding knowledge HIV/AIDS, behavior and practices including condom use among MSM in Khartoum State, capital of Sudan.

Methods: 713 receptive MSM were included in a cross sectional study by convenient sampling a "snow balling" technique within two months duration. Receptive MSM were selected on the ground of their increase risk of STIs including HIV compared to the insertive partners. They were interviewed using an adopted Behavioral Surveillance Survey (BSS) quesionnaire prepared by Family Health International (FHI). Venous blood were tested for HIV using ELISA method.

Results: HIV1 prevalence was found to be (9.3 %). Almost all (97.5%) of them were Muslims, (49.1%) were originally from Khartoum State, and around half (49.6%) were students either in secondary schools or at universities.The mean age at first sex was 11 years. Oral sex was parcticed by almost all (98.3%) of MSM as stand a lone practice or as part of sexul act with insertive partners.Commercial sex was practiced by two third (75.5%) of them while vast majority (97.2%) were having more than one sexual partner at a time. Nearly half (47%) mentioned use of condom at last sex, while only (3.3%) reported consistent condom use. More than half (55.3%) did not percive the link between anal sex and HIV infection.

Conclusions: The study revield that MSM are part of Khartoum State community, though marginalized and undignified. The reorded HIVprevalence was the highest compared to other at risk population. Having multiple sexual partners, exchanging sex for money and inconsistent use of condom risking MSM of contracting HIV/AIDS.
