Issues: This action, developed by GAPA-RS (Support Group for AIDS Prevention) and Nuances (Group for the Free Sexual Expression), aims to implement prevention strategies that are culturally suitable to the male prostitution universe and values. Through continuous and systematic communication with the main actors in this universe (homosexuals, hustlers, clients, brothels owners) and with the whole society, we attempt to broaden discussions and meanings about prostitution, health, citizenship and human rights in the context of AIDS epidemic.

Description: Intervention strategies include different tools that are lined up with a cultural and politic understanding of AIDS epidemic:
a) IEC materials (outdoors displays, erotic calendar and folders on HIV prevention and citizenship);
b) interventions in public and private spaces, with distribution of condoms and other prevention materials;
c) weekly workshops on health and human rights issues for male sex workers;
d) film exhibitions among low income communities and schools for discussions on prostitution and sexuality; e) studies and research initiatives, in association with the university and psychology and anthropology experts;
f) documentation of every step of the project. In fifteen months, through weekly interventions and visits, the project reached 2,500 men in prostitution and at homossociability places, like bars, saunas, clubs, brothels and streets.

Lessons learned: The main results indicate the widening of the social and politic conditions for sexuality exercise, especially in the relational male prostitution context. Considering that male prostitution is a factor of social vulnerability, this project also contributes to public policy formulation and to human rights accomplishment. Especially worthy and effective was the enhancement of male sex workers’ protagonism in the message formation and transmission processes.

Recommendations: The next steps include the analysis of data collected during all the activities as well as the narrowing of links with the actors involved in this universe.
