Issues:
This presentation will provide an overview of the Anwernekenhe 4 conference, its outcomes and how they inform national strategic HIV responses to address issues in indigenous communities.

The National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Sexual Health & Blood Borne Virus Strategy 2005 – 2008, identifies Australian indigenous gay men, sistergirls, transgender and men who have sex with men as a priority group for HIV/AIDS and sexual health responses. The majority of HIV transmission of indigenous Australians’ is attributed to male-to-male sex.

Description:
‘Anwernekenhe’ is the name given to a series of conferences, held every four years that underpin the community based response of the indigenous gay men, sistergirl and transgender community. Anwernekenhe conferences are coordinated by the National Indigenous Project of the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO) in collaboration with the Indigenous Strategic Alliance, the primary advisory committee to AFAO on indigenous issues.

Lessons learned:
The Anwernekenhe 4 program addresses, HIV & STI prevention, living with HIV/AIDS, sexuality and gender, isolation, discrimination and youth issues, with an emphasis on skills development in effective peer education that can be utilised by all conference delegates.

New components have been incorporated into Anwernekehe 4. Firstly, HIV issues affecting indigenous women have been included in the conference program for the first time. Secondly, participants will contribute to the development of a declaration of rights of indigenous peoples affected by HIV/AIDS. The Anwernekenhe conference will allow for Australian indigenous contribution into the declaration that will be drafted at a number of international indigenous meetings leading up to the 16th International AIDS Conference in Toronto.

Recommendations:
Anwernekenhe conferences provide an opportunity to evaluate responses, learn of new and emerging issues in meeting the challenges of HIV/AIDS and sexual health in Australian indigenous communities.
