Abstract

IDUs as service providers in Nepal

D.K. Gurung

Issues:
As most of the ongoing programs are focused on awareness, a huge gap exists in addressing the current need of comprehensive care and support, and empowerment to the infected and affected. Keeping the need to address the concerns of PLWHA´s empowerment as an active agent of the change in process and to strengthen the capacity of positive groups to amplify their voices, Community Support Group 2059, Pokhara (CSG) led by the infected and affected people has been working to uplift the lives of IDUs living with HIV/AIDS in Pokhara.

Description:
CSG is a non-governmental organization established by former drug users and IDUs living with HIV in Nepal. CSG has been providing site-peer counseling and referral to drug users since its establishment. CSG is community based NGO providing a continuum of care to people infected or affected by HIV and use opportunities for prevention, through the district-based, integrated programs. CSG also has been a affordable and accessible drug treatment and rehabilitation facility to drug user and IDUs living with HIV in Nepal, which is only rehab center in Nepal owned and run by recovering drug users.

Lessons learned:
Greater involvement of People affected in project planning and implementation plays a vital role in the overall outcome of any project. Our work focuses on Treatment, Care and support interventions however prevention should be the mainstay in all our approaches.

Recommendations:
Thus bringing this two aspects together we have strategically framed “prevention to Care & Support continuum” This includes prevention education, voluntary counseling and testing, home based care, referral and Intensive Care homes.
