Issues: Scientific studies about customers of male sex workers (MSW) are scarce amongst other due to difficulties in reaching this group. Therefore, data about customers of MSW were often collected indirectly by surveying MSW and their customers. Such data have to be considered invalid insofar as MSW display their subjective interpretation of the customer´s motivation to buy sex, sexual orientation, condom use etc.. However, it is crucial to survey customers di-rectly.
A recently completed Swiss Study on HIV-protection behaviour provides experience on how to recruit and interview customers of MSW.
Description: The study examines the HIV-protection strategies of MSW´s customers . Data have been collected by qualitative face-to-face interviews. These problem focussed interviews of ap-proximately 50 minutes cover several topics (meaning of having sex, buying sex and HIV/Aids).
The participants were recruited on the places where they buy sex and through information channels they use to contact MSW: specific bars, sex cinemas, the internet, advertisements in newspapers, flyers and places where MSW are on the game.
Lessons learned: Our experience shows that it is possible to reach customers of MSW for scientific research, moreover they are willing to pass on information about buying sex and their protection be-haviour. 22 customers agreed to participate in our study. Most of them (14) were recruited by internet. They replied to our project´s profile in the internet. 6 replied to our advertisement in a daily free newspaper. One customer was recruited in the street while seeking sex and one in a bar.
Recommendations:
- Recruiting on the places where customers buy sex and through information channels customers use to contact MSW is effective.
- Recruiting by internet is most efficient.
- Problem focussed interviews proved to be adequate for interviewing customers of MSW.
- An accepting and anonymous approach is prerequisite for an interview.
