Introduction: The Study aims at determining the effects of the drugs on CD4+ and viral load, there relationship and reliability in patient monitoring, efficacy and other adverse side effects, under the Presidential Emergency Plan for Antiretroviral (PEPFAR) Prgramme.
Methods: A total number of one hundred patients who are drug naïve aged between 20-61 years where consecutively recruited for the study. 70% of whom are female and 30% are male. CD4+ count and viral load analysis using the flow cytometric method and Roche Amplicor 1.5 version test where respectively used to analyze all the samples at baseline and 6 months. The Patients attended a monthly medical examinations in the clinic.
Results: : At baseline, a mean CD+ count of 135 cells /ul, which rose to a mean of 310 cells/ul at 6 month, was recorded. A viral load mean count of 225,716 copies/ml at baseline, which droped to a mean value of 52,456 copies/ml at 6 months was recorded. 12% of the patients droped at the end of 6 months, while 74% exhibited an undetectable viral load. 48% of the patients has a CD4+ count of <350 cells/ul while 52% has a CD4+ count of >350 at the end of the study period.
Conclusions: The drug positively affects the CD4+ count and Viral Load Levels of the patients. It decreases the viral load and Increases the CD4+ which are reliable indices in therapeutic management of HIV-1 infection. The combination therapy is effective and has produced a desirable result in the period under study.
