Issue:The Reproductive Educative and Community Health (REACH) project Kapchorwa, Uganda has been instrumental in fighting against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Uganda. FGM has been attributed to the spread of HIV/AIDS through the circumciser's blade, which is only wiped with a dirty cloth before proceeding to the next candidate.

Description: Forty women from the Sebei county of Kapchorwa were interviewed on issues related to FGM .27.5% of these women were aware that FGM was an avenue for the spread of HIV/AIDS.33% would not allow to have their daughters circumcised for the fear of them contracting HIV/AIDS.75% of the women wanted FGM to be eradicated.

Lessons learnt: Campaigners for the eradication of FGM have used HIV/AIDS education as a major tool in reducing the number of women circumcised for fear of contracting HIV/AIDS.

Recommendations: The FGM sensitisers have to be further trained in HIV/AIDS skills so as to be better equipped in HIV/AIDS education.
The risk of HIV infection can be a further tool in helping to reduce FGM
Women from communities that practise FGM need to access to information on health issues in particular HIV/AIDS to help them in their fight to eradicate FGM.
