Background: China is facing an expanding HIV/AIDS epidemic in men who have sex with men (MSM). This study is to evaluate the feasibility and initial efficacy of a pilot intervention targeting HIV risks among MSM in Beijing, China. Methods: A pre-and-post assessment was performed in a cohort of 104 MSM who were followed for 6 months after the pilot intervention. Assisted with MSM volunteers, we recruited eligible subjects from bars, bathhouses, and MSM homes. After pre-assessment, MSM received a brief information-based education. Results: At the base survey, 104 MSM reported having had male sexual partners, 85 did at the 6-month follow-up (C¬2= 20.91, p < 0.001). The reported median number of male partners at the post assessment was reduced to 2 (range: 0-21) from 3 (range:1-20) at the baseline (Z =3.47, p < 0.01). At the baseline, 19% of MSM reported having had female sex partners, 13% at the follow-up (C¬2= 4.9, p < 0.05). The median number of female sex partners was not significantly changed. Forty-two percent of MSM consistently used condoms with regular partners at the baseline, and 41% at the follow-up. Forty-nine percent consistently used condoms with non-regular sex partners at baseline, and 77% at the follow-up (C¬2= 6.17, p < 0.001 ). Before the intervention, 39% of MSM voluntarily accepted an HIV test, and one was HIV positive. At the 6-month follow-up, 72% voluntarily accepted the test and none of them were positive. The prevalence of syphilis was 5% at the baseline and 4% at the follow-up. Conclusions: Findings from this pilot intervention document some initial effect of the intervention on risk behavior changes. Future studies need to be implemented to evaluate the cultural acceptance and efficacy of a full-scale HIV intervention among MSM in China.
