Abstract

Laundas and Kotis: emerging trans gender identities in India -Different background, same problems

S.K. Giri

Background: Sexuality is a complex and mystique subject and it becomes all the more mystique when we reasearch the "non-heterosexuals"-here the Laundas and the Kotis-feminine men trapped in a males body. It´s a age old tradition in U.P. and Bihar for feminine men to dance in any social function including marriage. Its a very good means of earning money but has great risk as they eventualy turn into sex slaves who are denied their basic rights. In this present paper we bring out the voices of the laundas and the kotis in context to the ´Launda Naach´ in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. We highlight their vulnerability, plight, risk to health and talk about their rights.Being a part of the community and working with them we bring their experienecs of life.
Methods: Sample of 100 kothi and Launda in Bihar and U.P. Indepth interview with structured questionnaire, case study method, observation and FGD.
Results: We will be tracing their migration pattern and the socio economic vulnerability which results in such displacement. We will study the stigma and the marginalisation that these group faces in their every day life and look into different health risks they are exposed to.
Conclusions: This study will be a stepping stone towards a long term intervention for the community. Kolkata Rista would like to work for the upliftment of this community catering to their needs and continue working with them for ascertaining their rights.
