Background: To measure the co-prevalence of blood-borne virus (BBV) transmission in injecting (IDUs) and non injecting (NIDUs) drug users in Uppsala County.
Methods: The study was conducted in Uppsala county du2003 to 2006. It was a cross-sectional design with participants recruited from 5 different recruitment settings. A total of 243 drug users were enrolled during the study. Participants completed a questionnaire that asked about illicit drug use and participants´blood samples were tested for HIV, HCV, HBV, and HAV.
Results: One hundred forty-five (60%) study participants were IDUs and 98 were NIDUs (40%). Among IDUs, 91 (63%) were HCV positive and one (1%)was HIV positive. More than 26% had evidence of being infected with HBV( either in the past, acute infection or chronic infection). 104 (72%) reported sharing injecting equipment. 19% had serological evidence of previous HAV infection. In NIDUs seroprevalences of HCV, HBV, HAV, and HIV was 2%, 6%, 27%, and 0%, respectively.
Conclusions: The prevalence of BBVs was high in this study´s IDU population compared with NIDUs and emphasizes the need for relevant educative interventions in these two different drug user communities.
