Issues: The Ryan White Modernization Act has made antiretroviral treatment available to those who would otherwise go without treatment. Access to HIV treatment is difficult, particularly in medically underserved and rural areas. Description: A survey of persons living with HIV/AIDS and receiving medications from the AIDS Drug Assistance Program were asked to complete a questionnaire to ascertain their views on access to care, perceived barriers, factors influencing quality of life, and prevention messages in HIV clinical care. Lessons learned: The data from 1,100 persons with HIV showed that access to care was greatly facilitated by the ADAP Program. The survey demonstrated that relationships between patients and clinical providers was positive and adherence to antiretroviral treatment was high. However, prevention messages were not routinely included in clinical intervention encounters. Next steps: Another survey will be conducted with persons with HIV to further examine prevention issues in primary care and continue to assess access to treatment and care.
