Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) is characterized by a long duration treatment and high proportion of abandon. Objective: To describe the factors associated to abandon of TB treatment. Methods: Prospective longitudinal study in a cohort of TB patients infected (HIV+) and not infected (HIV-) with HIV. Inclusion criteria: all patients diagnosed with TB. We considered treatment interruption when the individual returned to be treated, abandon when the individual did not return and retreatment when the interruption was greater than 30 days. Data analysis was performed considering the frequencies. Results: From January 2000 to January 2003, 150 patients were included, 89 males (59,3%) and 61 females (40,7%), mean age was 36,07 years (DP(12,97), 86/150 (57,3%) were HIV+ and 64 (42,7%) were HIV-, 28/150 were homo/bisexuals and 2/150 (1,3%) were intravenous drug users. We observed that 65/150 (43%) interrupted TB treatment, 43/65 (66,1%) because of adverse events (AE), 5/65 (7,7%) abandoned and never returned and 13/65 (20%) died. From those 65 patients who interrupted TB treatment 32 (49,2%) were retreated once, 9 (13,8%) were retreated twice and 2 (3,1%) were retreated three times. From the 86 HIV+ patients 37 (43,0%) interrupted TB treatment, in 30 cases (34,9%) because of AE and 10 (11,6%) abandoned and 8/86 (9,3%) died. We observe 7/150 (4,7%) cases of recurrence. Three of them presented AE during TB treatment and 4 were HIV+. Conclusion: AE were the most prevalent cause of treatment interruption. HIV individuals were not predominant among cases of abandon.
