Statement of the problem: After more than 10 years of anti-HIV/AIDS campaigns targetted at Nigerian Youth preaching the “ABC” approach to safe –sex, results reveal a decline in the number of sexual partners with a increasing number opting for one sexual partner but low condom use is still reported despite the intensification of these campaigns. Objectives: To assess the acceptability of “Partner Testing” among Nigerian youth in schools in Ibadan, Nigeria. To determine the HIV/AIDS related knowledge of students in Ibadan. To determine the sexual behavioural practices among students in Ibadan. To investigate reasons for low condom use among students in Ibadan. To make recommendations based on findings for improved HIV/AIDS prevention campaign strategies. Method: A cross sectional questionnaire survey containing questions on HIV transmission, protective measures, condom use, sexual practices and voluntary HIV testing was carried out in 5 higher institutions of learning in Ibadan, Nigeria. Blood samples from volunteers was collected and screened for HIV. Data was analysed using Epi-info-6 statistical program. Results:One thousand students completed the questionnaires,430 males(43%) and 570 females (57%). 97.7% males and 100% females knew HIV could be contracted through sexual intercourse and 86% males and 72.2% females knew HIV could be contracted through incorrect condom use with an infected person.Abstinence and faithfullnesss to one sexual partner was most practiced as 32.6% males and 56.1%females reported no sexual partner during the last 3 months.62.8% males and 64.9% females were sexually active and 48.1% sexcually active males and 27% sexually active females had ever used a condom . An overwhelming majority of both male and female students accepted prior to involvement in a new sexual relationship. Conclusions:There is nead to modify the wordings of the “ABC” approach to safe- sex to read as follows: A: Abstaining from premarital sex is a sure way to avoid HIV/AIDS. B: Be sure you go for “Partner Testing” if you must have unprotected sex. C: Condom must be used always if you must have sex with a partner of unknown sero status.
