Objectives: To determine the sexually transmissible infections that favour transmission of HIV,sexual behaviour and condom use of respondents.
Method: 1,980 men and women were examined for STIs in Gombe, a semi-urban city in northern Nigeria and blood, urine, and swab samples collected for some bacteriological and serological Tests for STIs including HIV screening. Questionnaires containing information on sociodemographic characteristics,HIV/AIDS related knowledge and sexual behavioural practices were completed and data analysed using Epi-info-6 statistical program.
Results: A total of 398(20.1%) were found to have HPV genital infection while 1400(70.7%) had other STIs and 182(9.2%) had none.Of the 398 persons with HPV,222(55.8%) were males and 180(81.1%) were found seropositive, while 176(44.2%)were females and 110(62.5%) seropositive. Out of the 182 persons with no STI, 10(5.5%) were seropositive.710(50.7%) of the population with other STIs were seropositive.Peak incidence of STI together with HIV was the 18 –29 years age range.1800(91%) respondents practiced vaginal sex only while 180(9%) practiced both vaginal and anal sex and all tested HIV positive with a high incidence of STIs. No case of homosexuality was recorded.
Conclusions: This study shows that there is a high incidence of HPV and other STIs which favour transmission of HIV/AIDS in Gombe, there is nead to train peer educators for anti-HIV/AIDS education. Government has to make more efforts to encourage indigenes to attend clinics by reducing cost of treating STIs in clinics in semi –urban cities in northern Nigeria.
