Background: The relationship between Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and HIV have been reported by several workers. The HIV seroprevalence among HBV patients in a resource constrained setting is hereby evaluated. Objectives: To determine the HIV seroprevalence among HBV patients. Methods: One hundred and eight-two coded sera of HBV positive patients with clinically confirmed liver cirrhosis attending through screening laboratories in Lagos, Nigeria were screened for HIV antibodies between August 2001 to July 2002. HIV antibody was assayed using (capillus – Trinity biotech – U.S.A.) ELISA method. All reactive sera were confirmed by Western blot (Biorad Pasteur). Fifteen FTA negative control population were also tested for HIV antibody. Results: Forty-three (24%) of the patients were co-infected with HIV antibody, 9 (21%) of the HIV positive sera were co-infected with HIV 1 and HIV 2, 18 (49%) were HIV 1 infected while 6 (14%) were infected with HIV 2. Three (20%) of control FTA negative samples were HIV positive. Conclusion: HIV infection could be associated with the increased incidence of HBV. However, it is yet to be established whether the immunodeficiency induced by HIV is increasing the susceptibility to HBV or vice versa. Continued sampling is ongoing as large samples could be of good prediction.
