Today’s work on AIDS/HIV related issues demands rapid and exhaustive search to derive maximum information. The study aims to review this globally, assess publication patterns and characterize the changes and other bibliometric issues in HIV research. MEDLINE database (Silver plotter) was used to retrieve articles on AIDS/HIV from 1982 to 2002. Total of 135,031 AIDS/HIV articles were processed, publications seen in total of 4348 journals in the past 20 years. In 1982, AIDS articles were 26, increasing to 9237 in 1991, stabilizing therefrom. 72,970(54%) articles had US as country of publication while 25,220(18%) from UK, 5047(3%) from Germany, 4535 from France. 86 countries published HIV articles in 53 languages. Language categorization showed English publications (118,472 articles, 88%), 3911 French articles, simultaneous publication of French with other languages is 36, English with other 18 languages is 464 articles and rest in 34 Non-English Journals (11.92%). Highest number of articles was from AIDS (5559 articles) followed by Lancet (3401 articles). Among non-English journals Med-Clin-Brac(Spanish) and Presse-Med(French) takes 24th and 25th place with 643 and 629 articles. Categorizing articles on publication type, 103,352(77%) were journal article, letters 9837(7%), News 5760(4%) clinical trial 4604(3%). Classification of research (check-tag categorization) showed 69% of publications are human studies (exclusively female studies 23%), animal research was 12%(14838), rest are in-vitro, case report and comparative study. The study also showed gender prioritization in HIV research and the presentation will further discuss in detail about various factors and trends in HIV&AIDS literature and research in developing and developed countries.
