Issues: Due to stigma attached to talk about safer sex practice in southern Nepal, it is difficult to accept information and resources through single HIV/AIDS prevention program.

Description: Bara District of Nepal is located in southern plain extended up to the Indian border. The composition of population of the district is comprised of various ethnic groups specially based on caste system including Muslim (15%) with about (25%) population of occupational and so called untouchable caste. This district has a vast population of daily wage laborers who are illiterate and practise high risk behavior. Also, large numbers of them use to go India and big cities to earn money. National survey has shown about 6% of migrant workers has got HIV positive. Existing health programs have not addressed to men regarding reproductive health including HIV/AIDS. So Community Welfare Centre, regional level NGO has implemented a program named “Men involving in reproductive health services in Bara District” focusing on HIV/AIDS as one of its major components. Community Welfare Centre trained 225 young peer educators who were nominated from their communities. The topics of the training were family planning, HIV/AIDS/STI, child care and maternal health. This project has tremendously increased the use of condoms and referral of STI patients to local health facilities. Peer educators have not only served community by providing education, condoms, STI referral services among their peers but they have enhanced the service of female community health volunteers and health facility staffs’ services as of government’s protocol. Peer educators’ participation in awareness program like local FM radio, street drama program and other activities has brought approval from their communities to work on HIV/AIDS

Lessons learned: Increased demand of condoms, coming STI patients to local health facility along with other health services has proved that integration of HIV/AIDS program with other health program is acceptable
