Background: Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) has been detected from various strains of baboons and old world monkeys in various parts of the world. Previous studies have documented molecular relationships between HIV-1 and -2 and several starins of SIV. This suggests that HIV might have originated from simians and old world monkeys. Serological datection and characterization of various strains of SIV is of paramount importance in circumvetting the risks of emergence of new dangerous strains of lentiviruses. very little data on SIV serostatus in Olive baboons <Papio anubis> exist despites their high populations in most of the tropical countries. in this study, detection of antibodies against SIV antigens revealed presence of Retroviral cross-reactive antibodies similar to those found in HIV. thre is no clear linkage of SIVolb with the strains of HIV.
Methods: Venous blood from 79 Olive baboon caught from various Geographical places in Kenya and housed at IPR were screened for SIVserostatus using inno-lia HIV confirmation kit from Innogenetics as per the manufacturer´s directions.
Results: fourteen out of 79 PANs were SIV positive. the Retroviral cross-reactive antibodies detected reacted with the following synthetic and recombinant peptides and proteins for both HIV1/-2 and HIV-1 serotype O in the LIa strips used: gp17, p24,p31,gp41,sgp105, sgp120.
Conclusions: Our results suggests that there is a close relationship between SIV and HIV proteins/ antigens. these can be used to further elucidate the structures of these epitopes and facilitates in development of effective drugs and vaccines. such close similarity has great evidence of close resemblance and evolutionary relationship between these viruses and this emphasises the fact that there is a lot that can be understood about HIV from this Non-human primate model.
