Abstract

HIV/AIDS among lesbian sex workers in Kenya

N. Nteere

Issues: Lesbian sex workers and the rising number of HIV infections among them has been a big issue which galebitra took upon itself to research and fund self sustaining projects which the lesbians can sustain their livelihoods with. The small scale projects have created employment and consequently provided the lesbians some money which they can comfortably buy their own antiretrovirals.

Description: Homosexuality is illegal in Kenya and so is the term sex,a big taboo, so the lesbians are even more marginalised than any other group.

Lessons learned: Through providing an open avenue through which sex education can be easily mentioned without stereotypes, infected and affected HIV lesbians can come out easily and discuss their issues more openly. By providing the sex workers with an alternative mode of generating income, it cuts down the spread of HIV among the gay community which suffers more from unemployment than any other minority group in the country, it does not help by giving this minority fish, in terms of alms, but it helps by showing this minority group the best way to fish everyday.

Recommendations: Galebitra has come a long way in tackling gay issues and this has been a great step in dealing with lesbian issues at the forefront. We have equiped the lesbians with knowledge, in Home based care, prevention and treatment of opportunistic infections, Human rights organisations should recognise the tactics used and through this approach the HIV/AIDS affected population will be cut off to half. The community has segregated the gay community and the HIV-infected community but it will be proved that they too can deliver to society.
