Background: Focusing on groups who are especially at risk is a effective strategy in reducing the burden of HIV/AIDS and other STIs/RTIs. The migrant workers are one among such groups due to living conditions, socio-cultural and economic factors.

Objectives:

1. To assess some aspects of reproductive health among migrant labourers in Nitte & Mulki

2. To assess some aspects of care seeking behaviour among them.

Methods: A total of 56 migrant labourers (31 males and 25 females) residing at one rural (Nitte) settlement and one urban (Mulki) settlement were interviewed using a questionnaire administered in their own language by Medical Interns working under the community medicine department. Purposive sampling was used.

Results: Among the married respondents, 2 respondents (4.25%) got married at less than 10 yrs of age, 9 respondents (19.1%) consummated the marriage between 10-15 yrs of age, 20(42.5%) respondents did not use any method of contraception. Fifty three percent of the respondents had not seen a condom and 53% did not know that condoms helped prevent HIV/AIDS. Health care personnel were the least frequent source of information. Leucorrhoea ( 34.6%) and burning micturition (38.46%) were the commonest gynecological problems. Another shocking fact was that out of the 18 deliveries reported by the female respondents 13 ( 72.2%) took place at home.

Conclusions: The vulnerability of the migrant workers is real and needs to be addressed effectively with a multi-pronged approach including condom promotion, promoting contraception and promotion of general reproductive health. The workplace would be an ideal setting for such interventions.
