Abstract
Fight against HIV/AIDS in resource-limited conditions- an effective, efficient, realistic and acceptable approach
A.P. Singh
Issues: Cost-effective tool of HIV-prevention is the need of hour for India and countries with resource-limited conditions. To increase coverage/ scale-up responses to the epidemic, I through the Global Science Academy (GSA)- an HIV/AIDS-NGO, madeinnovative behavioural- prevention efforts in most economical participatory- approach.
Description: Dealing with projects-´Targeted intervention (T.I.) amongst sex-workers of Basti-U.P.-India´ and ´Nationwide media-campaign on HIV/AIDS (-partnering with BBC World Servise Trust- BBC WST)´, GSA in my coordination, decentralized its approach in mobilizing masses, thereby developing STOP-AIDS-NETWORKS throughout India. As a result, 300 key-stakeholders including law-enforcement authorities, local leaders, health-care providers, police & NGOs mainstreamed in T.I. activities on regular basis during 2002-2005 and over 10% of them initiated STOP_AIDS clubs. Further, resulted from mass-media-campaign oof BBC WST & national television-channel, GSA received 3324 letters between January 2003-September 2005 and responded by providing information/counseling on HIV/AIDS. Also, sent them pro-forma for STOP-AIDS networking (free) membership, seeking their interest in joining hands. 1407 (42.3%) individuals/organizations supported this innovative approach with their enthusiastic interest an by October 2005, 41 STOP-AIDS-NETWORKS become functional, started HIV/AIDS awareness amongst masses.
Lessons learned: Indian people take the epidemic seriously and willing to volunteer their efforts in HIV/AIDS-fight and such a particiatory- approach is effective, efficient, acceptable, realistic and gives sustainable results.
Recommendations: Participatory approach as adopted by GSA need to be replicated around the globe in the fight against HIV/AIDS in resource-limited conditions.
