Abstract

Feminization of the epidemic

B. Prajapati

Issues: Developing strategies which give women oppertunities to earn and income beside sex work, not as rehabilitation programs for sex workers but to increase young women´s range of option. we have a trend of conducting seminars, workshop and meetings about HIV/AIDS, STIs and drug use where women can not comfortably participate because as in most asian countries the women knew a little about sex and didn´t talk about it and it is very difficult for them to expose as a drug user so we can intergrate HIV/AIDS adn drug use with other issue of interest such as health, communication in family, parent-child and matitial relationships, assertiveness skill. .

Description: HIV prevalence among IDUs in Kathmandu Nepal´s capital city is 70% and 45% nation wide(new era 2002) similarly more then 20%of female sex workers were seen HIV positive adn so on and so forth. A raging conflict and politicial unrest for the past several years has fulfilled the role of catalyst to these epidemic It is said that the portion of female drug user are less then male but no specific survey has been done. The government as well as doners should design programs to involve female drus users instead of using them as a token.

Lessons learned: Our ability to negotiate safer sex are frequently restricted by gender inequalities as so with the safer injection. Female are much more vulnerable then our male counter part when it comes in protecting themselves against the disease through both the drug using habit and sex practice. Low litracy, female dominated society heavy dependency, female gential mutilation ( FGM), a greater responsibility to bring up the child and existing gender based discrimination;

Recommendations: We need to have more clear concept about female drug users and sex worker
Job oppertunity and proper training should be avaliable
Proper awareness education information
