Background: Various studies had shown that the PLWA is highly stigmatized in the workplace and that there is need for attitudinal change for proper care of these patients.
Methods: Descriptive cross sectional study. PLWA were asked to fill a questionnaire on attitude of employers to them.
Results: Four hundred and twenty respondents filled the questionnaire out of which 250 subjects were working at the time of study. Only 39 PLWA reported that their employer were aware of their HIV status. The mean age of the sample was 36.4 years (S.D. 9.65 years) with a range of 18 to 79 years. The modal age group was 30 to 34 years and 89% of the respondents were below 50 years of age. Sixty-one percent were females while 39% were males. Out of the subjects whose employers were aware of their HIV status, 9 were sacked, 16 received some help from their employers while 14 claimed that they were treated as before their HIV status was known.
Conclusions: Most PLWA did not inform their employer of their HIV status because of fear of stigma and discrimination. There is need for more enlightenment on HIV in the workplace especially in the area of mode of transmission and universal precaution.
