An epidemiologic study on AIDS among migrant workers in Thailand

S. Thanaisawanyangkoon

Background:
The scale of international migration has been increasing steadily at the regional level and national level. The issue of human trafficking across borders and the heightened vulnerability of migrants to health hazards such HIV/AIDS and other infections are just some of the major concerns that beset nations with great number of migrants. It is recognised that people movement can increase potential risk of HIV transmission. This study aimed to describe the percentage and the specific characteristics of AIDS migrants workers cases reported in Thailand.
Methods:
During the years 1989-2005, data was computerized by using a package program based on Windows operation system and entered by ward nurses, medical record officers of the hospitals both public and private through provincial Public Health Office. Data recorded are the personal profile, risk factors, illness symptoms, and opportunistic diseases. The report is done monthly.

Results: From 1989 to 2005, 5,015 AIDS migrant cases were reported to DDC. Data show that most AIDS migrant cases come from Myanmar (55.4%), China(12.8%), Vietnam (4.3 %) and nearly 2% from Cambodia. Approximately 49.9 % were labour, fishery workers about 6.5% and sex workers 0.4%.The most frequent cause of transmission was heterosexual activity (70.4%).About 70.5% of reported AIDS cases were in men. The opportunistic infections were Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (Pulmonary or Extra-pulmonary) 19.80%.
Conclusions: The results suggest an increasing trend of AIDS migrants cases in Thailand during recent years. Cross-border programme interventions, better access to health care and a comprehensive public approach should be applied to migrants and moblie populations.
