Issues: Social Marketing Promotion to Community People in Remote Area
Description: In 2004, PSI/C’s social marketing program has just turned 10 years old. It has expanded from marketing a single condom brand (Number One) to marketing oral contraceptives, a lubricant and condom, a birth spacing condom, an injectable, a malaria treatment product and a malaria diagnosis kit. In addition, they have begun socially franchising the Sun Quality Health clinics and plan to launch voluntary counseling and testing sites and a kit for treatment of male urethritis by early 2005. Most of that expansion has occurred since 2002 (OK pills were added in 1997).
The United Health Network (UHN) is a partnership that brings together international and local NGOs committed to improve the health of the Cambodian people by creating widespread access to PSI/C products and health information through social marketing, particularly to rural and vulnerable communities.
Currently, PSI/C with 30 UHN members to do BCC activities to create demand and fulfill those demand by distribute product with very low price to suitable rural and vulnerable communities people.
Lessons learned:
- Collaboration between PSI and other HIV/AIDS NGOs is increasingPerceptions of Government
- Improve awareness and knowledge of health issues and demand for PSI products among rural and high-risk individuals and families.
- Building UHN members´ staff capacity on Social Marketing
- Community people give value to PSI product
- Contribute in HIV/AID prevention and encourage people care about themself.
Recommendations: 1. Coordinate distribution activities better and assign a smaller role to UHN members in the overall distribution strategy.
2. Encourage and support more complementary behavior change communications activities by UHN members.
3. Some reengineering of PSI/C is needed to increase BCC capacity. 4. Integrate work with UHN members in a cross-cutting fashion with all PSI departments.
5. Improve monitoring and evaluation of UHN activities.
