Home care of people living with HIV/AIDS attending university college hospital Ibadan

Background: HIV/AIDS constitute a major public health problem with rising number of cases and associated deaths. home care of these patients is very important in monitoring their wellbeing and prolonging their life.


Methods: descriptive cross sectional study. consecutive sampling method was used. it extended from february to july 2005. a structured questionnaire was administered to each respondent and home visit was done to assess the home environment using a home visit guideline.

Results: four hundred and ten subjects participated in the study. the mean age was 36.4 years (SD 9.65 years), range 18 to 79 years (61 years). modal age group 30 to 34 years. male 156 (39%), female 244 (61%). the age of the care givers range from 8 years to 86 years. only 15% had nobody to care for them while 85% had at least one family member providing home based care for these respondents. ninety-five percent of the family members were not trained on care giving.

Conclusions: home based care is central to the care of people living with HIV/AIDS and since this is given mostly by family members they should be trained on care giving and mode of transmission of HIV.
