Issues: HIV/AIDs epidemic is still a serious problem in Cambodia. Many couple, discordant couple, PLHAs under ART do continue to engage in unprotected sex even after receiving counselling. The work is confined mainly to work with suspected and PLHA people as positive prevention after conducting Participatory Site Assessment in 2003.
The project: Positive Prevention is one of the main project of Frontier Prevention Project which are implementing in urban and rural areas in Cambodia. Risk reduction counselling for positive and negative people after blood test for HIV to identify triggers for unsafe sex for defending “healthy sex” disclosure of HIV status to sexual partners. Peer based program on risk reduction counselling is increasing popular where trained people with HIV positive or buddies to facilitate in-risk reduction group discussion to others HIV people. Condom and lubricant have been promoted and distributed in the target areas. Providing post test counselling for post test negative and positive in order to give the opportunity to remain their healthy status. Conduct outreach activities for reaching closure suspected people to providing health information focus on promoting VCCT. Facilitate PLHA to aces health services including ART, and OIs. Working closely with Cambodian People living with HIV Network to raise their voice in the society for their right.
Lessons learned: To train PLHA as peer educators play the important role in working in positive prevention. Working closely with discordant couple to encourage to have confidentially counsel the partner directly for changing risky behaviours, this approach is successful than patient referral in reaching partners. Barring to use condom include the desire for believing in sexual intimacy and trust, drug and alcohol.
Recommendations: Integrating positive prevention with wider home base care activities and promote sexual health with HIV/AIDs prevention strategies with positive people, to play the role important to response in HIV epidimic.
