Abstract
Transparency: the essence of therapeutic partnership in AIDS care, a Philippine perspective
S. Zaldivar1, R. Ruiz2
Issues: The psychosocial, economic, and Human Rights issues related to HIV/AIDS have greater devastating effects than the absence of cure for persons infected and affected by the disease. These issues have a critical influence on the client’s health seeking behavior regarding the utilization of services , particularly adherence to antiretroviral therapy.
Description: The objective of the study was to describe the development of an assessment toolkit on the impact of HIV-AIDS and the process of its implementation when it was pilot tested on clients and nurses. The Milan Guide to Counseling provided the conceptual framework from which Self-Assessed Perception and Health Seeking Behavior set of Questionnaires were developed. Issues were further substantiated within the context of individual’s experiences, relationships, and conditions through the enactment of the tsunami stories.
Lessons learned: The t-test result obtained from comparing the weighted means between the assessment of 60 clients and 38 nurses showed significant difference in the following categories, namely: Psychological Burden (0.36); Economic Impact (0.82); and Human Rights Violation (0.36). The implication of the results showed that the nurses tend to be more influenced by their clinical practice and had broader perspectives on these issues. Overall, due to these factors, the nurses were unable to fully empathize with their clients. On the other hand, the clients were more subjective, representing a gap in care. These findings uncovered a healthy opportunity to bridge the gap for commitment. Participants reported that having examined their perceptions provided them a better insight into the challenge of living, and compassionate caring for one another. They offered specific examples how they intended to improve on self-care by utilizing medical and social services.
Recommendations: Refinement of its reliability and validity would improve its predictive value. This should serve as an innovative toolkit to incorporate into the nursing curriculum in a resource constrained environment.
