Background: Studies in Peru highlight the vulnerability of young women in stable relationships to acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs) due to their: low risk perception of sexually acquiring STIs while in monogamous relationships and poor protection against non-monogamous partners’ risky sexual practices. We presented the female condom (FC) to a sample of young women in Lima as an additional option to the male condom (MC). Hands-on training and several FCs for use during sex were provided to these women. A theoretical framework comprised of personal and perceived partner attitudes, behavioral control, and past behavior constructs guided this study.

Methods: This is a secondary analysis of an existing data set (N=160). We used standardized questionnaires to collect demographic data and sexual health history, and to measure attitudes toward the FC and its use from young, heterosexual women in Lima (ages 18-29 years). Chi-square analyses and a multivariate logistic regression model with our theoretical constructs were applied to assess determinants of FC preference.

Results: The participants were mainly single (87%) and post-secondary students (80%), with a mean age of 21.4 years. 42% of the women preferred the FC over the MC, 12% preferred the MC, and 33% liked either method. Personal attitudes (p=.006), perceived partner attitudes (p=.007), behavioral control (p=.006), and past behavior (p=.010) were significantly associated with FC preference. Behavioral control (i.e. self-efficacy with FC insertion) was a significant predictor of preference for the FC (OR=2.97, CI=1.02,8.64).

Conclusions: These results underscore the importance of incorporating behavioral control and self-efficacy elements in condom promotion efforts in this vulnerable population.
