Creating HIV/AIDS awareness among the Nigerian children/youths through art

Issues:
The "Global Peace Tiles project a project which involves a series of tile-making workshops (collages on wood), culminating in the December 1, 2005 exhibitions of murals assembled from the tiles at three international sites - in Switzerland, South Africa, and India - and local and national venues worldwide (www.peacetiles.net ).
Description:
Workshops and exhibits are taking place in 17 countries, in which the "visual voices" of youth affected by HIV/AIDS will be seen and hopefully heard. The goal is to raise awareness about the vulnerability and resilience of youth in the face of this pandemic, and to provide them with a dynamic means for self-advocacy and self-expression. The first Peace Tiles project involved youth affected by war in Uganda, who have since made a mural for the youth of Darfur, Sudan.
Peace Tiles are produced in workshops designed to engage participants emotionally, intellectually, and creatively in a process of "arts advocacy." Children are encouraged to bring artifacts from their lives that speak to a personal experience with HIV/AIDS, or their knowledge of the pandemic, or on related subjects close to their hearts and homes. These artifacts are integrated into personal collages that may have "scrap book" qualities, narrative features, and educational value. When put together, the tiles create moving and uplifting murals that capture the vibrancy and hope of youth around the world.
Lessons learned:
HIV/AIDS awareness generation Tiles produced in Nigeria by intermixture of youth and adult-made tiles, will be shown, and explanatory materials and hosting will be available in English. The Centre for Enlightenment and Development Intervention (CEDI) formerly Policy Research Services hope to do an oral or poster presentation on this project as it has developed in Nigeria, and a demonstration of tile-making may also be planned.
