Prevention programme for youth and adolescents using the Youth Friendly Center for Information, Education and Counseling (YFCIEC) model

Issues:
The HIV prevalence rate among people aged 15-49 years in Cameroon is 6.9 per cent, one of the highest in the region. City streets and back alleys have become a battleground in the fight against AIDS in the country


Description:

1. Methodology 1: Risk and Vulnerability Mapping (RVM)

2. Methodology 2: Behavior Analysis (BA) combined with Life Skills Training

• STEP1: Supervisor Peer Educators are assigned to Communication Areas (CA), corresponding to where they live.

• STEP2: Working closely with 30 young volunteers (eventual peer educators) identified within his/her CA, to lists at-risk groups and risk factors within.

• STEP3: Based on data collected in the risk mapping exercise, the SPE and 30 PE begin to list the types of positive behaviors they would like to help promote among the peers in their neighborhood.

• STEP4: The SPE and 30 PE in each CA identify actions among the vulnerable groups that will best help promote identified behaviors.

• STEP5: SPEs identify the objectives for adopting positive behavior among; vulnerable groups, community organizers and opinion leaders.

• STEP6: SPEs work on formulating the communication objectives for work with; vulnerable groups, community organizers and opinion leaders.

• STEP7: SPEs work on defining the strategies of communication including the messages and channels to be employed.

• STEP8: SPEs work with PE in respective CAs to field test messages and techniques in order to develop a ‘toolkit’ of communication devicesty.

• STEP9: SPEs write-up their Communications Micro-Plan for respective CAs.

• STEP10: With Education Management Team members, SPEs develop YFCIEC center’s annual plan.

3. Methodology 3: Peer Education


Lessons learned:
When given the opportunity to express themselves and take the lead, young people can accomplish great things.


Recommendations:
The lessons learned can be applied in other countries
