Issues: In 1988 a group of HIV+ and HIV- people decided to organise inside the sanitorium of Santiago de Las Vegas a group to work on AIDS prevention to educate population and PLWHA about the disease and how to avoid the infection with HIV.
Description: After 15 years of continuous work we have well organised groups, one in every province of the country which do prevention work with different vulnerable groups, specially MSM and educate PLWHA on how to live with HIV and how to protect themselves and others. It has been achieved organising a network around the country which guarantie communication between groups, information and resources for working. We have stablished a monitoring and evaluation system that lets us know how every group is developing their work and the needs they have. We have the support of the NGO HIVOS.
Lessons learned: We have learned that stablishing a network we can develop a better prevention work, that is a good way to help the groups to grow, monitoring and evaluation proccesses are very important to keep people motivated on doing prevention. We have identified the most vulnerable groups in every province and the GPSIDAs work with them. We have identified methodologies for working with those populations. The national scientific event is a very important way to help people to develop their skills in prevention work. The national bulletin which we send to the provinces has helped every group to have the information they need to develop their work.
Recommendations: We have developed a new methodology of organising and monitoring the prevention work and it could be used in other countries in order to educate population and PLWHA.
