Abstract
HIV/AIDS interventions among injecting drug users and their sexual partners

Issues: High prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS transmission among IDUs and their sexual partners in three wards of Eastern Imphal,Manipur.India.
Description: In July 2003, the HIV/AIDS intervention program among IDUs and their sexual partners was launched by Social Awareness Service Organisation (SASO) supported by USAID/FHI through a project consisting of a Drop-in-centre and an Outreach Unit facilities . Their intervention approach includes Behavior Change Communication (BCC) for harm reduction, sexual health services for IDUs and their partners, community based detoxification services to IDUs to reduce the risk of HIV, health care and other support services to PLHA, advocacy and networking activities to create an enabling environment and reduce stigma and discrimination.
Lessons learned: Some of the key achievements after a period of 28 months includes; outreach services to 899 IDUs and 150 spouses and primary health care services to150 spouses,94 widows and 77 children in their families ; Care and support services to 170 IDUs, 41 spouses , 57 widows and 32 children PLHA s. and establishment of 4 support groups of PLHA .In addition, the project have provided community detoxification services to 361 IDUs and provided training to 250 care givers and also 20 Doctors from public and private sectors and 80 nurses were sensitized on how to take care of PLHA in a non-discriminatory manner to reduce stigma and discrimination.
Recommendations: Need challenge of a greater coverage with qualitative approach is still there .The Government , non-government organizations and civil societies need to address this approach.
