Background: The necessity of AIDS educational campaigns is to reduce spread of HIV infection by changing attitudes and practices related to high-risk behaviors. This should include also people that will be engaged in managing AIDS patients. For these reasons we evaluated the Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (KAP) about HIV/AIDS and STDs and its Prevention, in Health Sciences Students from Chile. The objective of the study was to determinate KAP about HIV/AIDS and STDs and its prevention in Health Sciences from a Chilean university.
Methods: We made a modification and proper adaptation of a WHO´s standardized survey inventories assessing AIDS-related KAP, with 23-questions; conducted in Students from Medicine and Attention to Mental Retardation (AMR) Schools’ individuals (1st and 5th years), at the Antofagasta’s University. Sample was calculated with Epi Info v.6.0. Statistical analysis was done with SPSS 10.0 (95% of confidence).
Results: From a total of 5100 students (59.8% Medicine, 40.2% AMR), 30.2% was surveyed (IC95% 26.28-34.42%) (55.2% Medicine, 44.8% AMR) (mean age: 20.5±2.7 y-old,[15-29]). From total, 33.12% smoke (38.31% once in life); 5.84% use illicit drugs (25.32% once in life; 24.66% from Medicine and 37.5% at AMR, p>.05), being 70.3% inhalated, 29.7% ingested and 0% endovenously. About 44.16% has sexual relations (23.4% once in life), 99% are heterosexuals; 66.1% do relations without condom (70.2% Medicine, 20% AMR; p<.001); just 0.6% has done the HIV-ELISA test once in life (73.9% is willing to do it); 2.6% have suffer other STDs. Finally, 94.81% considered important to prevent HIV/AIDS.
Conclusions: Current results indicate importance of educate and instruct more on different aspects of HIV/AIDS and STDs, particularly about prevention and reproductive and sexual education, given the found prevalence of risky behavior in this evaluated young population which represented a significant sample of health sciences careers from a Chilean university.
