Abstract

HIV Positive Women National Workshop in empowering ourselves – experience from Indonesia

F. Chia Iskandar

Indonesia’s number of people infected by HIV is increasing, and parts of PLWHA are women. Larger issue such as women co-dependency to men, leads to smaller access of women in getting information, leads women to be always behind men, as we know, this is a cultural issue.
In May 2004, APN+ (Asia Pacific Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS) in collaboration with the Indonesia local organizers, held a workshop for Women Living with HIV/AIDS in Asia Pacific region.
From the APN+ workshop, Indonesian participants came up with action plan in doing First Indonesian Women Living with HIV/AIDS in building up skills in the responds of HIV epidemic. This first Indonesian Women Living with HIV/AIDS workshop was held in July 2005.
The output of the first women workshop, attended by 34 HIV positive women from 15 provinces in Indonesia was to establish the Indonesia HIV Positive National Women Network, which will be called IPPI.
The results of the workshop was the agreement of Indonesian HIV Positive women, issues and needs regarding HIV positive women issues and what we can contribute to empower ourselves and to collaborate with Governments and other women organizations.
Some of the issues are regarding income generating, voicing out women’s rights, PMTCT and the availability of health services for women.
The purpose of APN+ is to empower women to voice their rights with regard to HIV/AIDS, as well as to contribute in the prevention, care and support. One of the major objectives of ‘Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS’ is to prevent mother to child transmission. As the representatives in the UNICEF’s global campaign launch in New York, October 2005, therefore a close linkage between the two organizations objectives arises and can be connected.
It is a strategic opportunity to reach out girls and women through the collaboration of the network and campaign.
