Vazquez M.1, Ameal F.1

Introduction: To characterise the profile and establish the frequency and distribution of HIV/AIDS infections in young drug-users accessing to voluntary testing.
Methods: 379 cases of young drug-users ranging from 15 to 29 years – 34.6% women and 65.4% men - tested at Hospital Fernandez from 2001 to 2004 were processed and analysed. They represent 15.5% of young people accessing to voluntary test in this period. They were classified in three groups: non- injecting drug users (DU), injecting drug users (IDU) and IDU couples.
Results: DU:330 cases; 17.4% from 15 to 19; 45.1% from 20 to 24 and 38.5% from 25 to 29 years; 29.7% women and 70.3% men. 44% have low educational level. 25.4% always use condoms, 64.5% some times and 10% never use. Seroprevalence 7%. IDU: 22 cases; 40.9%(9 cases) from 20 to 24 and 54.5%(12 cases) from 25 to 29 years. Only one case from 15 to 19 years was registered. 72.7% are men. 69.5% have low educational level 13.6% always use condoms, 59.09% some times and 27.7% never use. Seroprevalence 22.7%. IDU couples: 27 cases; 14.8%(4 cases) from 15 to 19, 48.1%(13 cases) from 20 to 24 and 37.1%(10 cases) from 25 to 29 years. All of them are women. 60% have low educational level 25.9% always use condoms, 63% some times and 11.1% never use. Seroprevalence 18.5%.
Conclusions: All groups have a high knowledge about preventive measures. The way of consuming and the educational level are related to the use of condoms and also to the seroprevalence in each group. A high proportion of IDU and IDU couples has a low instruction level. DUs have an inferior seroprevalence and a higher educational level, but in all three groups PLWHIV have a low educational level.
