Objective: To ascertain HIV patients’knowlegde on LW&T. Methods: We interviewed HIV patients collecting epidemiological, clinical and functional data. We assessed: illness’knowledge, perception of severity, physicians information’s satisfaction, capability to participate in decision making, ability to endure extreme health conditions, information and opinion on LW&T. Results: Number of patients: 258. Mean age. 39.6±8.9 years. 69.4% male. 66% had primary education, and 46.5% were AIDS. Out of 50.8% had been admitted previously to hospital and 5% had needed an intensive care unit (ICU). Mean Karnofsky index was 92.5. 82.4% described their condition as chronic. 88.3% thought it could take them an ICU and 83.3% believed it would cause their death. Perception of severity (analogical visual scale 0-100) was 79. 94.6 were satisfied with the information received and 61.3 would want to participate in medical decisions. 11% of the patients agreed to continue living with respiratory support and 17% depending on another person. 25% had talked to their physician about this subject, and 31% had information about LW&T. Awareness of LW&T was related to gender (women, p=0.024), high level of studies (p=0.0001) and wish to participate in medical decision (p=0.002). Conclusions: Knowlegde fot he disease is high among HIV patients. Most would like to take part in medical decisions.
